STATUS REPORT ON COLUMBUS PROJECT

1. ANTENNAS

Fund raising campaign has provided sufficient money to pay for the development and manufacturing of the combined L/S-band antennas. Funds for the UHF-band antennas could not be gathered.

The L/S-band antennas will be installed on the MDPs (Meteorite Debris Panels) on the nadir of Columbus early January.

A meeting with ESA, EADS and Alenia engineers took place in Bremen, 17 November 2005. Dr Pawel Kabacik, Wroclaw University, presented a model of the L/S-band antennas. Oliver Amend, DG6BCE represented ARISS. Oliver, who is working on an scientific Columbus Project, is living near Bremen.

2. EQUIPMENT

A Columbus working group has been set up to develop a project for onboard equipment. This group meets per teleconferences.

Minutes of these teleconferences as well as input from group members is available on the ARISS-Europe website.

The general idea is to install a linear transponder, L-band uplink and S-band downlink. This transponder would operate continuously.

Moreover, there would be a DATV system, downlink only. DATV would be used on special occasions, such as ARISS School Contacts and similar events.

Other uses are still under discussion.

3. PICTURES

During the meeting in Bremen, Oliver had permission to take pictures of Columbus in the clean room.

These pictures are also available on the ARISS-Europe website.

We will keep you informed of further developments.
