DUTCH ASTRONAUT ANDRE KUIPERS, DELTA MISSION AND “ZEG HET ISS”

Today, Monday April 19 2004, a Soyuz rocket launched three space travellers on orbit. ISS increment 9 crew members Genadi Padalka (RN3DT) and Michael Fincke (KE5AIT) are on their way to the International Space Station, accompanied by ESA astronaut Andre Kuipers (PI9ISS).

Andre Kuipers is performing the DELTA Mission, also called Dutch Soyuz Mission (DSM). An impressive list of scientific experiments are on Andre’s timeline for the nine days he will stay on board.

Among the experiments are two ARISS School Contacts. One with club station PI9ESA of the ESTEC Radio Club, located at Noordwijk, the Netherlands. The other with the club station PI4TUE of the Radio Club of the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

ESA’s ISS Utilisation Strategy and Education Office has set up a competition for primary schools in the Netherlands and in Flanders, Belgium, called “Zeg het ISS”, which means “Talk ISS”. Dozens of classes have participated and the 5 winning classes are invited, courtesy of ESA, to a Space Weekend in Noordwijk.

The youngsters will visit Space Expo, the permanent Space exhibition located nearby ESTEC, the European Space Research and Technology Centre. The big event will be the direct radio contact with Andre Kuipers on board the ISS. Several schoolchildren will put a question to the astronaut and get his answer right from Space. This conversation will be conducted in Dutch.

The ARISS contact is scheduled Saturday 24 April 2004 at 07:50 UTC, which is 09:50 European continental time.

As usually, interested parties are invited to listen to the downlink frequency 145.800 MHz FM. The signals from the ISS will be

audible over a wide region of western Europe.
